I won’t sugarcoat it: this year’s big summer blockbusters did not meet the hype. Especially following the summer of Barbenheimer, it was frustrating — though understandable given the long shadow of last year’s dual labor strikes — that nothing really seemed to capture the cultural imagination. I’d also say the quality was lacking, too, with no major studio release getting above a “B” in my ledger.

But that doesn’t mean that I didn’t have a good time here and there. Apologies to which of my friends (or perhaps an Internet rando) told me this quip that I’m now going to regurgitate, but “Twisters is a five-star three-star movie.”

And I’d tack on at least another half-star if you see the film in 4DX, which you should have the opportunity to do so on a much larger scale over Labor Day weekend. (And with the original 1996 presented in the format, to boot!) I cannot stress enough how much you should go take the ride in this absurd exhibition style instead of just watching it at home. As Glen Powell’s Tyler would say…

Twisters seems like a real breakthrough movie for 4DX, an assertion I’m basing on both anecdotal reports of friends flocking to see it this summer — and the fact that Universal is bringing it back for encore screenings. I ended up having to see it in Times Square (ew) on a Sunday morning because it was the only showtime I could get tickets for in mid-August. If you have an inkling of wanting to see Twisters in 4DX, I’d recommend booking your tickets now. And if you need further justification, allow me to explain more for paid subscribers…
